It’s no secret that our current healthcare system does not work. Given an annual bite of $2.8 trillion in 2009, with spending on pace to hit $4.3 trillion by 2012, the U.S. healthcare treatment model is economically unsustainable. Fundamental to supporting the arch of healthcare reform’s solution mix is the need to address and correct the attitude of deferred responsibility (personal, corporate, and community), and the sociological, economic, and educational conditions that foster the lifestyle choices that adversely impact our healthcare system.

In this thought-provoking and fast moving presentation, you will hear from an international leader in the field of population health management: Michael Samuelson. From his seat as a health promotion pioneer in the early 1970s to his current position as President and CEO of The Health & Wellness Institute, Michael knows this story from all angles and he is anxious to share the observations and lessons learned from his journey.

Topics to be covered include:

Ten Fundamental Understandings

Healthcare vs. Sickcare: Time to Level Set

The Five Ws of Healthcare

What’s Happening?

So What?

What Now?

What Next?

What Difference Did It/Will It Make?

The Health Continuum & The Determinants of Health

Healthcare Transformation: Paternalism to Shared Responsibility

The New Social Contract: A Formula for Chronic Disease Prevention

Cyndy Nayer and John E. Riedel present on Leveraging Health: A Primer for Health Promotion Practitioners using Value-Based Designs.

The questions that every employer and plan sponsor, every health plan and benefits manager should be asking must reframe the question: How much health, instead of healthcare, are we buying? How much could we buy with the same money we are spending now, if we purchased services more wisely?

Understanding that things had to change if employers were to be able to continue to afford healthcare, a few forward thinking payers and influencers began to rethink their healthcare strategies. Two healthcare “experiments” began to take hold. One involved refocusing employees on the virtues of health and wellness. The other focused on decreasing the financial barriers to some of the care that would actually put healthier people back to work because they were compliant with their treatments.

These experiments that utilized reductions in co-pays for some populations continued to broaden with the inclusion of incentives for participation in annual or baseline health risk assessments, health fairs, and disease management. So began the development of behavior change through incentives that actively engage consumers to participate in their health and healthcare. The use of these incentives have evolved into the levers of population change that form the core of value-based design initiatives.

Learning Objectives:

1.	Understand the nature of value-based design and the challenges it is designed to resolve.
2.	Be conversant with the 4 Ds of value-based design . . data, design, delivery and dividends.
3.	Know why health promotion is a foundational element of value-based design.
4.	Learn the key skills and competencies that health promotion practitioners bring to successful implementation of value-based design.

Worksite wellness programs have become an accepted means for employers to address poor health and related costs. Employers are ready to address employee health issues and are seeking answers on what works and how to do it. They are most interested in neutral expert sources for this assistance that state governments and similar organizations can provide. Reaching the thousands of businesses in a state is a challenge. However forming key partnerships with associations such as the state chamber of commerce provides communication channels, business credibility and other opportunities. This session presents a successful case study of the Kentucky Worksite Wellness Initiative formed in 2006 as a partnership between the Kentucky Department for Public Health and the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce

Fact panels, package labels, nutrition reports. There has to be a better way to make decisions about the foods you eat. Now there is: the NuVal™ Nutritional Scoring System.

The NuVal System does the nutritional heavy lifting so you don’t have to. Developed by an independent panel of nutrition and medical experts, the System helps you see – at a glance – the nutritional value of the food you buy.

How? The NuVal System scores food on a scale of 1-100. The higher the NuVal Score, the better the nutrition. It’s that simple. And it’s coming to every aisle of your favorite grocery stores – right there on the shelf tag. Now you can compare overall nutrition the same way you compare price. You can even compare apples and oranges.

NuVal LLC is dedicated to making good nutrition easy by providing comprehensive nutritional information in a single number. NuVal LLC is a joint venture formed in 2008 by Topco Associates, LLC, and Griffin Hospital of Derby, Connecticut, a non-profit community hospital and home to the Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center. Located in Braintree, MA, NuVal licenses its proprietary food scoring system, which is based on ONQI TM (Overall Nutrition Quality Index) science, to food retailers across the country.

Mental and emotional wellness are key components to overall health. Training in the skills that foster life satisfaction and job satisfaction are associated with better health, higher productivity, and lower absenteeism in the workplace. The science of happiness that is emerging from positive psychology holds promise to increase awareness of the factors that comprise the blissful life. And the practical application of these skills will benefit both employees and employers through improved engagement in a healthy workplace. New possibilities can be seen when organizations let go of a reactive focus on problems and engage in a “broaden and build” strategy.

Topic:

How can worksite health promotion translate into organizational effectiveness? By broadening the scope to create a culture of well-being, safety and employee engagement. High performing organizations recognize the value of their human capital and invest in their employees to build on their strengths. Typical approaches to wellness programs are short-sighted and not enough to have long-term success; health is only a fraction of a bigger, more complex picture of what impacts organizations. Increased well-being and engagement result from supporting individual intrinsic values and creating a culture that supports employee growth and development. This session will provide a framework for focusing on organizational well-being as a means to individual well-being.

Participants will be able to:

1. Understand what impacts productivity and engagement at work.
2. Describe attributes of engagement and disengagement within organizations and strategies to build higher levels of engagement by focusing on strengths.
3. Identify strategies for understanding and supporting individual intrinsic values within an organization’s culture.

Topic: Worksite Wellness has been designed around incentives to drive participation. But what if we’ve gotten it wrong? Participation and engagement are not the same; engagement is what is critical to long-term success and stems from intrinsic motivation, not incentives. Research shows that incentives and extrinsic rewards at best result in short-term compliance; at worst they weaken intrinsic motivation. Sustainable change and engagement requires a high level of intrinsic motivation and a shift in how people think about themselves and the world around them. It is time to look beyond incentives to shift how people think and increase intrinsic capacity. This session will explore the pitfalls of incentives and extrinsic motivation and present a framework for fostering intrinsic capacity and motivation.

Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will be able to understand the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and the role incentives play with motivation.
2. Participants will be able to understand the difference between intrinsic, extrinsic, and systemic values and the role each plays in decision-making and motivation.
3. Participants will learn ways to build change efforts in a way that is less reliant on incentives and more aligned with fostering intrinsic capacity and motivation.
