Michigan’s Healthy Businesses – Decades in the Making

The presentation will take participants through the succession of worksite wellness programming at the state health department level, starting with the classes and screenings of the 1980s to the 2011 policy and environmental change program focus, highlighting along the way lessons learned and what was sustained and used in subsequent programs.  The “Decades in the Making” refers to the longetivity of the program, so the presentation will include some factoids about the 1980s, 90s and 2000s. Michigan has a lot of history and a lot to share!

About the Presenters

Christi Demitz

I have worked in public health chronic disease prevention and management for over 10 years, with the majority of those years spent in cardiovascular health. Worksite wellness changed my life when I was a participant in a program offered by a previous employer. We had teams, and my team name was LBLTRNU (I’ll be healthier than you . . . clever, huh?) My participation on this team helped me to increase my water consumption and reduce my fat intake, skills I’ve carried with me for almost 20 years!

My next venture into worksite wellness was when I coordinated a walking program for our state executive, judicial and legislative branches called “Michigan Legislative Health Challenge.” Just by the nature of the occupation, you can probably guess it was a pretty competitive bunch (the executive branch won fair and square).

I have been involved in developing an online worksite assessment with a complimentary worksite resource guide (based on the famous Wisconsin guide). I started a worksite wellness program in my own building by accident 5 years ago, and it is still going strong. I hold a master degree in social work and a high regard for people who are working day in and day out making the business case for worksite wellness.
