Move, Manage and Mingle: The Keys to Successful Aging

MOVE: The foundation for healthy, successful aging is movement. We have eliminated activity through labor saving devices, and it has come at the cost of what we call “normal aging.” Normal aging results in loss of almost 30-40 per cent of strength from 40 – 70 years of age, and this loss keeps accelerating as you age. Lack of movement leads to poor blood circulation in the brain, and loss of brain tissue. Increasing movement, in a supportive environment, can significantly improve both physical and mental function. There is much more to share in this area that will encourage you to MOVE.

MANAGE: To age successfully you must MANAGE your daily routine, and your health care needs. You need systematic feedback through mobility assessments, lifestyle reviews and Health Risk Appraisals, to plan and become more aware of your needs. Secondly, you need to develop new skills in working with your health care provider(s). There are specific things you can do to increase your satisfaction with this part of aging. And, with the support of an appropriate health care staff, your chances of managing this part of your successful aging journey increases.

MINGLE: To age successfully, you need to MINGLE. Social connections are a key to improved health and perceived well-being. Research is clear, staying in your home as you age leads to decreasing social connections and rapid isolation. Moving into a community that maximizes your opportunities for engagement, opens the door to continued expansion of your social network. As a result, your journey of aging is enhanced, and your immune system works better as a result. You get fewer infections, and you live longer, better.
